The Discoverers ended their regular season with a pair of losses.

The Columbus High boys basketball team fell behind early and couldn’t recover in a 65-44 loss to Lincoln East Friday at Lincoln before losing to Grand Island 56-48 in overtime Saturday at the CHS gym.

Against the Spartans, the Discoverers were outscored 20-13 in the first quarter and 20-14 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

“East came out and hit a bunch of shots early. We did a decent job of hitting some shots and getting some stops. I was proud of how the kids fought back,” CHS head coach Dave Hiebner said. “They put a couple possessions together there in the third quarter, then we started trading baskets. The problem is, when you’re down eight or nine, you can’t trade baskets.”

The Spartans used a fast pace on offense and their height advantage to earn a 30-20 advantage in rebounding.

“They push the floor so well,” Hiebner said. “They can bring out 6-foot-6 across the board. Their size forces us to do some things to get them out of sync.”

The Discoverers were led by Logan Menke’s 11 points on five-for-eight shooting, while Nate Ek added 10 points.

“I thought (Menke) did a good job of being patient offensively and getting to the rim when he needed to,” Hiebner said. “I’m really pleased with where Logan has come from the beginning of the year to now.”

On Saturday, the Discoverers took a four-point lead into halftime before the Islanders worked their way back in the second half to force the game into overtime at 44-all.

In the overtime period, Columbus couldn’t get its offense going, as the Islanders outscored the Discoverers 12-4 in the extra time.

Parker Smejkal and Nick Linder each scored eight points to lead the Discoverers offensively. Menke added six points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Preston Oberg and Nathan Sliva each added seven points. Ek , Caleb Timm and Logan Menke each chipped in six points.
