COLUMBUS -- Lakeview’s defense controlled Central City from the start and the Vikings’ offense came through with just enough to get a 43-40 win over the Bison on Thursday.

Lakeview (10-11) held Central City (3-17) scoreless for the first six minutes and head coach Monte Jones said that was the difference.

“We were able to keep their score down and we were able to score just enough,” he said.

The Bison rallied to tie the game at 8-all at the end of the first quarter and the game remained within a couple possession pretty much the rest of the game.

Central City rallied from a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 40-all with about two minutes to go before the Vikings clamped down and held the Bison scoreless the rest of the way while knocking down three free throws to win the game.

“We’ve learned so much just by being in games like this,” Jones said. “We know how to respond now and we can’t ask for a better education than that going into districts next week.”

Abby Kapels paced the Vikings with a game-high 19 points, including making 9 of 11 free throws.

“That was just absolute, pure hustle,” Jones said of Kapels’ big game. “Those were hustle points.”

Ali Janssen came up with big baskets time after time for Lakeview and finished with 15 points.

“Her points all came at important times when we were in little scoring droughts,” Jones said.

Gracie Borer chipped in six points as the trio combined for 40 of the team’s 43 points.

Lakeview went back ahead in the second quarter as Janssen came up with half of the Vikings’ 14 points in the period to take a 22-17 lead at the break.

It was 29-26 after three quarter and Lakeview made 6 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Lakeview plays at Class C-1, No. 5 Wahoo on Friday.
