As a sophomore, David City’s Seth Styskal took third place in the Class C state tournament while wrestling at 106 pounds.
He followed that up with a second-place finish last season at 113 pounds.
That made it pretty easy to set the goal for his senior campaign — he wants to win a state title.
Styskal is already one of the most-accomplished wrestlers in a David City program that has experienced plenty of success in recent years.
The Scouts won the Class C team championship in 2016, finished second last season and were fifth when Styskal was a freshman in 2015. They’ve also claimed the Class C title at the state dual championships three times in the event’s five-year history and qualified for the end-of-season tournament every year.
But that doesn’t mean they’re satisfied — far from it.
Styskal, a three-sport athlete who also played football and plans to participate in track and field next spring, knows David City has the talent to add to its trophy case this season.
“If everyone wrestles good at the district and state tournaments, we could win it this year,” he said of the team’s state title chances.
He also knows championships aren’t handed to you, so the Scouts will have to work hard to get there.
That starts with going the extra mile during practice and outside of it.
“It’s doing what other teams don’t,” said Styskal, whether that’s staying late for extra drills or pushing yourself during individual workouts.
“You can improve everywhere,” he said.
That mentality has paid off for Styskal over the past two seasons.
He went 49-4 as a sophomore and 35-5 last season, reaching the state title match before falling to undefeated Gage Krolikowski of Valentine, who is expected to wrestle at 120 pounds this season.
Styskal will stay at 113 pounds, where the two-time state medalist also has his sights set on an undefeated season.
“If I can be undefeated that would be great,” he said. “But nothing’s easy.”
He got off to a good start in Saturday’s York Invite, where Styskal went 5-0 with three pins to win the title.
