Columbus Area Bison tryout scheduled
COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Area All-Star Bison basketball team tryout will be held on Sunday, March 18 at Columbus High School.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for registration and the tryout begins at 7:00 p.m. The tryout is open to all area eighth- and ninth-grade boys. Players selected to the Columbus Area Bison team will participate in the annual Nebraska Bison Freshman state tournament over Memorial Day weekend in Lincoln.

All Columbus area tryout participants must complete an application form and submit the completed form to Tony Miller, Columbus Area Bison head coach, no later than March 17. All area head boys basketball coaches have received a copy of the application form or you may request a form by contacting coach Miller or Jimmy Motz, tryout director.

Lahm wins conference title
WAYNE -- Wayne State senior Derek Lahm, a Scotus Central Catholic graduate, captured a conference title on Friday.
Lahm matched a season-best leap of 23 feet, 8 1/2 inches to capture the Northern Sun Conference long jump title. Lahm also finished second in the heptathlon to teammate Robert Sullivan. Sullivan finished with 5,202 points and Lahm scored 5,063 points.
Athletes compete in powerlifting meet
YUTAN -- Three Shelby-Rising City kids competed in the Class C state raw powerlifting meet in Yutan on Saturday and all three came home with medals.
Raw powerlifting differs from regular powerlifting in that athletes aren't allowed to use any sort of equipment that aids their ability, such as a weightlifting belt.
Andrew Garcia won the 220-pound division and set new personal bests in every lift. Garcia squated 340 pounds, benched 225 pounds and deadlifted 460 pounds for a total of 1,025 pounds.
Antonio Lopez grabbed the silver medal at 181 pounds and also set four new personal records. Lopez's best lifts were 355 pounds in the squat, 190 pounds on bench press and 380 pounds on deadlift for a total of 925 pounds, 88 pounds better than his previous best.
Nick Vavricek won the bronze medal at 198 pounds and, like his two teammates, set four new personal bests. Vavricek lifted 380 pounds in the squat, 210 pounds in the bench press and 455 pounds in the deadlift for a total of 1,045 pounds.
Wrestling club racks up hardware
The Duncan Wrestling Club competed in two tournaments last weekend with the following results:
Saturday in Hastings
First place: Breckyn Reinke, Braydon Nuttleman, Hunter Brunkhorst, Easton Henry and Devon Moore.
Second place: Cohen Micek, Kobe Micek and Brightyn Micek.
Third place: Spencer Shotkoski.
Sunday in North Bend
The Duncan Wrestling Club won the team title.
First place: Breckyn Reinke, Cohen Micek, Kobe Micek, Devon Moore and Riley Eickmeier.
Second place: Christian LeCompte, Parker Newman, Hunter Brunkhorst, Easton Henry, Zach Cole, Spencer Shotkoski and Cody Cuba.
Third place: Brady Eickmeier, Axl Schafer, Gavin Halvorse, Calan Windedahl, Leightyn Neely, Breyton Jarecki, Harper Michalal, Braydon Nuttleman, Issak Liebig and Sabistian Duren.
Fourth place: Colton Jarecki.
