Anchor Hoops registration date set
COLUMBUS -- Registration for Anchor Hoops, a program designed to promote basketball for future Columbus boys basketball players, is set for Sept. 20.
Parents can register their sons, in third through eighth grade, from 6:30-8 p.m. at Columbus High School. Use the north side activities entrance.
The participation fee is $50, which includes costs and fees for the 2017-18 year.
The program, now in its third year, focuses on teaching the game, fundamentals, teamwork, competition and having fun.

Columbus hosting youth basketball tourneys
COLUMBUS -- The 3rd annual Columbus Icebreaker Tournament will take place Dec. 16 and 17 this year.
Anchor Hoops and Supreme Court Basketball will team up to host another tournament on Feb. 17 and 18, 2018.
Both boys and girls teams, in third through eighth grade, are eligible to enter both tournaments.
Teams that participate in the Columbus YMCA League receive a discount to play in the December tournament. Last year's tournament brought in close to 100 teams from around Nebraska and will be played at various gyms throughout Columbus.
Elks CC hosting Nebraska Open
COLUMBUS -- Elks Country Club is set to host the 26th Nebraska Open this week.
The Pro-Am portion of the tournament kicks off at noon on Thursday, and is followed by a three-day, professional-amateur, 54-hole tournament beginning Friday and concluding Sunday. Play begins at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday.
The annual event will raise around $78,000 this year for scholarships that will be given to students attending Nebraska’s community colleges, including Central Community College.
The tournament has been held at the Elks Country Club since 1991.
