Murray wins three medals

LINCOLN -- Taylor Murray brought home three gold medals in powerlifting at the Cornhusker State Games. Murray was first in her weight class in the powerlifting, bench press and push-pull competitions.

Junior Blues win sportsmanship award

LINCOLN -- The 2017 American Legion sportsmanship team award was presented to the Columbus United Federal Credit Union Junior Blues.

The award, named in memory of Gregory Lee Small, promotes sportsmanship and team pride among players.

Members of the American Legion Athletic Committee and umpires cast votes to determine the winner. The award was presented by Glenn Loseke.

The Junior Blues were coached by Columbus High head baseball coach Jimmy Johnson and assisted by Joshua Wenande.

Lahm receives more honors

WAYNE -- Wayne State junior Derek Lahm, a graduate of Scotus Central Catholic, recorded a 3.915 grade-point average while majoring in chemistry and health science to earn All-Academic honors from the USTFCCCA. Lahm easily beat the automatic qualifying GPA of 3.25.

Lahm's achievements in the classroom helped the Wayne State track team earn the All-Academic team award.

Lahm was also named CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team for his second Academic All-American honor in three years.

River Run scheduled

BELLWOOD — The Bellwood Daze River Run will be held 8 a.m. Aug. 5.

The event features a half-mile kids' run for ages 11 and younger and 2- and 6-mile races. Entry fees are $10 for the kids' run and $20 for the 2- and 6-mile races.

Race-day registration begins at 7 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church in Bellwood. Proceeds from the race will be used for upgrades to the Bellwood ballfields.

Lakeview holding golf tourney

COLUMBUS -- The second annual Richard "Dick" Kamm memorial golf tournament, sponsored by the Lakeview Education Foundation, will be held Aug. 20 at Elks Country Club.

The four-person scramble will have a noon shotgun start.

Participation is limited to the first 23 paid teams. Entry fees are $60 per person, or $240 per team. The entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, cart, flag prizes, meal and auction.

Club holding golf tourney

The Platte Valley Cattlemen are holding their annual golf tournament Aug. 14 at Club 91 Golf Course in Leigh and Steepleview Golf Course in Humphrey.

The first 22 four-person teams entered will play at Club 91. All other teams will play at Steepleview.

The tournament, which features a scramble format, will have a 1 p.m. shotgun start at Steepleview and 2 p.m. start at Club 91.

Cost is $50 per person and includes nine holes of golf, cart rental and a steak dinner after the tournament.

Loup River Riot scheduled

COLUMBUS -- The Loup River Riot will be held Saturday behind T-Bone Truck Stop along U.S. Highway 30 just south of Columbus.

Cost of admission is $30 if you bring an all-terrain vehicle and $10 for walk-ins with no ATV. Timed sand drag racing begins at 10 a.m. and there will also be a timed wheelie contest.

Mason Michaels will perform from 8-11 p.m. and camping will be available.

Cross County holding fundraiser

STROMSBURG -- Cross County Community Schools is holding a Cash for Camps fundraiser Aug. 18 aimed at helping offset the cost of team camps for parents.

The school will host a meal immediately following the sports scrimmages on the date, around 6:30 p.m. A ticket for the steak meal costs $25 while a burger meal ticket is $15.

There will be silent and live auctions as well as a golf cart raffle. Sean Callahan from HuskerOnline.com will be the guest speaker. Speaker-only tickets are available.

Bank hosting tennis tourney

YORK -- Cornerstone Bank will host its 35th annual non-sanctioned tennis tournament Aug. 5-6 at the Levitt Tennis Courts next to York High School.

Entries will be limited to one single and one double. The matches will be the best of three sets with a 12-point tiebreaker at 6-all. There will be a super tiebreaker if sets are split in lieu of a third set.

Registration forms are available at any Cornerstone Bank or on the bank’s website at www.cornerstoneconnect.com. The entry deadline is noon on Aug. 2. Singles entry fee is $15 per division and doubles entry fee is $20 per team.
