The Aquinas boys basketball team secured its ninth win of the season Jan.4 against Schuyler. Tyler Vavrina’s huge first half propelled the Monarchs to a 56-31 victory at home.

“We took care of the ball and didn’t have very many turnovers,” Aquinas coach Kyle Eller said. “Right away in the first quarter Tyler Vavrina came out hot offensively for us.”

Vavrina’s two threes to begin the game gave Aquinas a 6-2 lead. Zach Zavondy’s steal and layup extended the Monarch advantage to 8-2.

Schuyler responded with a three-pointer from Tyler Kohl. Austin Hall’s two free throws cut the lead to 10-7.

Aquinas ended the quarter on a 9-0 run to make it 19-7.

Vavrina’s corner jumper to begin the second quarter put the Monarchs up 21-9. Braden Smith made one free throw to make it 22-9. A stingy Monarch defense held the Warriors to one basket in the second quarter:

Vavrina led the Monarchs with 18 points in the first half.

At halftime, Aquinas led Schuyler 30-10.

The Warriors came out with four straight points to begin the third quarter. Austin Hall’s three-pointer and layup made it 33-19.

The Warriors had more success in the third, outscoring the Monarchs 13-10, but they couldn’t close the gap in the fourth.

After struggling offensively, the Monarchs shot the ball well in the fourth quarter. Every Monarch got into the scoring column. “It was surprising for me to see every member of the varsity team score tonight,” Eller said.

Vavrina led Aquinas with a game-high 20 points. Zach Zavodny added 9 points for the Monarchs.

Schuyler’s Austin Hall recorded 13 points, followed by Jakub Langemeier with 9 points.

Aquinas traveled Tuesday to play Twin River (2-7).
