The David City boys basketball team had its hands full Feb.5 against C2 No.5 Yutan at home. The Chieftains displayed its physicality inside in a 70-24 victory.

“I thought we came out and played really hard, especially on the defensive end of the floor,” David City coach Cole Carraher said. “We did a nice job of following the game plan in really digging down into the post and making those post moves and shots in the paint difficult to get up. We were getting enough stops early on to stay competitive, it just didn't quite last past that second quarter.”

Brady Timm made the first basket of the game to put Yutan up 2-0. On the next possession, Brett Heuertz rebound and layup made it 4-0.

Luis Salazar’s mid-range jumper got the Scouts on the board.

The Chieftains continued to pour in buckets with back to back layups inside by Colton Feist. Colby Tichota scored off a rebound to make Yutan’s lead to 13-2.

Josh Seibert’s three up top cut the deficit to ten points. The score was 17-7 after a jump shot in the lane by Salazar.

The Scouts first points of the second quarter came on a jumper from the free throw line by Seibert. Brady Timm answered with a basket to put the Chieftains back up 19-9.

Yutan continued to dominate David City on the inside. Feist made a layup while being fouled and his free throw  put Yutan up 26-13.

At the end of the half, Nick Ruth drove into the lane for a layup to make it 32-18.

David City struggled mightily on offense in the second half. The Scouts were outscored 31-4 in the last two-quarter of play. In the end, there was too much Feist and Heuertz on the offensive and defensive boards.

“We really need to improve our offensive execution in the half-court as we head into sub-districts,” Carraher said. “We have been pretty good in transition, but when teams get back and get set-up against us especially in a zone, it seems to cause us some fits.”

Ruth led the Scouts with 9 points, followed by Seibert with 7.

Feist had 18 points underneath lead all scorers. Brady Timm and Mason Timm each added 10 points.
