The Shelby-Rising City football ended the season Oct. 20 with a 52-20 victory over Cross County at Husky Field in Shelby. The Huskies finished the season with back-to-back wins and a 4-5 record.

“We played hard. Our defense minus two big plays, was solid all night,” S-RC coach Kevin Kopecky said.

Through the air and on the ground, the Huskies proved superior, producing 428 yards of total offense to Cross County’s 241.

Husky quarter back Mason Schleis’ one-yard run with 10:21 in the first quarter started the scoring. Schleis found Austin Coffin on the conversion to make it 8-0.

Five minutes later, Shelby-Rising City’s Lincoln Schoenrock scored on a 76-yard run. Mason Schleis ran in the conversion to put the Huskies up 16-0.

Shoenrock struck again wth a 28-yard touchdown run with 2:49 left. Mason Schleis’s run on the conversion was good Shelby- Rising City led 24-0.

Cross County found success in the second quarter. Lane Kelley connected with Kalin Gabriel for a 52-yard touchdown with 11:49 left. After the missed extra point, the Huskies led 24-6.

The Cougars scored their second touchdown of the quarter, on a 5-yard run by Grant Hollinger with 3:08 in the second quarter. Hollinger hit Alex Pinkleman for the conversion.

The Huskies responded with Schoenrock’s 46-yard touchdown run with 2:36 in the second quarter. Mason Schleis’s found Schoenrock on the conversion pass to put Shelby Rising City up 32-14.

Shelby-Rising City’s Jett Pineo ended the second quarter with a 13-yard touchdown catch with 56 seconds left. After a missed conversion the Huskies led 38-14 at halftime.

The teams traded big scoring plays in the third quarter: The Cougars’ Grant Hollinger hit Pinkleman for a 56-yard strike, but the conversion failed. The Huskies answered a minute later when Schleis threw a 59-yard bomb to Max Hoatson for a touchdown.

Jett Pineo hit Schleis for the final score, a one-yard pass.

Leading 52-20, the Husky reserves got in some playing time the final eight minutes.

Mason Schleis led the Huskies in passing with 168 yards on 11 completions. On the ground, Lincoln Schoenrock ran for 207 yards on 16 attempts. Brendan Johnston added 10.5 tackles on defense for Shelby-Rising City.

Kopecky said the team is excited about next year.

“We return almost everyone for the 2018 season,” Kopecky said. “We should have a very good football team next fall.”
