The Aquinas girls basketball team won its fourth straight game Jan.4 against East Butler. The Monarchs used points from turnovers to defeat the Tigers 69-29.
“We kept our focus for four quarters and that can be hard in any game,” Aquinas coach Vanessa Munter said. “If we can keep doing that, then good things are going to happen.”
“I was worried about the overall quickness of the Monarchs and their full court pressure,” East Butler coach Kevin Behne said. “We didn’t handle that pressure well and committed 26 turnovers. We’ve got to keep our composure and handle this type of pressure if we want to have some success.”
Aquinas and East Butler traded baskets to begin the game.
Jadyn Krafka’s layup with 7:25 put the Monarchs up 2-0. Kaitlyn Hain’s bucket underneath tied the game at 2-2. The Tigers took a 5-4 lead after Amanda Aerts made a layup and free-throw.
Larissa Sellers’ two free-throws and Breanna Stouffer’s up top jumper put Aquinas up 10-5.
The Monarchs ended the quarter on an 11-4 run. At the end of the first quarter, Aquinas led 21-9.
Veronica Kobza’s rebound and layup with 7:40 extended the Monarchs lead to 23-9. Anna Rigatuso’s basket in transition put the Tigers into double figures at 29-11.
East Butler was held to four points by the stout Aquinas defense in the second quarter as the Monarchs rolled to a 46-13 halftime lead.
The third quarter was the Tigers’ best, but heading to the fourth quarter Aquinas had a 63-25 advantage.
“The Monarchs have a talented group of shooters and quick players. We just don’t match up well in either category. They dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Tigers 34 to 14,” Behne said. “January is a busy month for us and we’ll face two rated teams and two conference teams that will present the same type of full court pressure. We’ve got to learn how to handle this type of pressure or it could be a long month.”
Kobza led Aquinas with a game-high 19 points and Vanessa Bohuslavsky dropped in 10 points.
East Butler’s Hain led the Tigers with 9 points, followed by Olivia Bohac and Madison Helman with 4 points.
