The Aquinas volleyball team started out hot, winning the first set against Hasting St. Cecilia on Saturday in the season's opening match.
The Bluehawks came out fighting and rattled off two wins, however, and the Monarchs had to dig deep to pull out the 3-2 victory, 25-16, 20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 16-14, on their home floor.
“It was nice to start the season with a win over a strong Centennial Conference rival. We have several areas in which we need to improve and some things that we need to tweak a bit, but for a first match I was very pleased with our effort,” said Aquinas coach Jody Pelan. “It was a total team effort, and that’s going to be one of this year’s strengths for us, our girls play as a team, and they rally around each other. That is a must in volleyball.”
The Monarchs' senior leadership showed, and junior Breanna Stouffer also had a strong performance. She recorded 10 kills, 12 assists and 11 digs. Senior libero Regan Pelan recorded 28 digs. Veronica Kobza had 17 assists and 10 digs. Juniors Micaiah Vrbka, 8 kills, and Kloe Ruth, 7 kills, also pitched in.
The Monarchs will host Yutan on Thursday night, and then after the Labor Day break, they’ll travel to a new experience against the Huskies at Shelby-Rising City, which has opened its new gymnasium.
