Third row: Coach Trevor Weiss, Valerie Bohuslavsky, Isabel Coufal, Jayci Roh, Alli Hartman, Darian Krenk, Macy Kobza, Kaylee Miller, Coach Paul Gahan.

The Aquinas softball team went 2-1 and took second place home from the Guardian Angel Central Catholic Invitational in West Point on Saturday.

The Monarchs defeated Centura-Cedar Valley 9-7, then outhit Guardian Angel 8-2 before facing Wahoo Bishop Neumann for the second time in three days for the championship.

The Cavaliers won 5-2, but the Monarchs didn’t make it an easy win.

“It was a good weekend for the team,” coach Paul Gahan said. “Kelsey Baer did a fine job in the circle all three games. I know she was a bit tired, but at the same time, she seemed to get stronger as the day progressed.”

Aquinas hit the ball well against Centura and scored in bunches, but also had some defensive struggles.

“We were in trouble late in the game, but came up with some defensive stops to preserve the win,” Gahan said. “Our outfielders - Darian Krenk, Sierra Meysenburg and Jill Witter - made good plays the entire game.”

The Monarchs played their most complete game against Guardian Angels, with a combination of good pitching, solid defense and timely hits.

“In the Championship Game against Bishop Neumann, we competed hard and played solid softball,” the coach said. “We managed just three hits for the game, but put the ball in play the whole game, striking out only three times. Overall, I was pleased with the team’s effort.”

Bishop Neumann 9, Aquinas 4

The Aquinas softball team couldn’t overcome Bishop Neumann’s 12 hits in a 9-4 defeat Aug. 22 at Wahoo.

Kelsey Baer struck out six batters but also gave up the 12 hits and had three runners on base due to walks and being hit by a pitch.

Vanessa Bohuslavsky went 1-4, hitting a home run. Valerie Bohuslavsky was 1-3, Kelsey Baer 2-2, Jayci Roh 1-3 and Jill Witter 1-3
