Aquinas won a lopsided home-court victory over Yutan Chieftains Aug. 31 in David City. The Monarchs (2-0) dominated in all statistical categories and won in straight sets 25-8, 25-17, and 25-13.
Micaiah Vrbka and Kloe Ruth led the Monarchs with seven kills each, and senior Becky Roh chipped in with five. Ronnie Kobza paced the defense with 10 digs, while Regan Pelan and Bre Stouffer each contributed with nine apiece.
Monarchs have a 2-0 start for the second straight, thanks in large part to the team’s preparation before the season.
“Our girls worked hard throughout the summer and are continuing to have a good work ethic. This group wants to do well, and they have bought into what we, as coaches, are trying to accomplish,” Aquinas coach Jodi Pelan said.
The team needs to get sharper on offense, Pelan said. “I was happy with the win tonight, but I was disappointed with some of our miscues on offense.”
Aquinas looks to use the hot start to the season as building blocks as the team looks forward to a tough Centennial Conference schedule.
“Starting off the season with a couple of wins is good for the girl’s confidence; our schedule will get tougher as the season progresses. Our conference rivals will be by far our toughest competition, and we have to continually improve if we want to be competitive”, Pelan said.
Aquinas makes its first visit to the new gym at Shelby-Rising City this Thursday.
