The Shelby-Rising City boys basketball team’s upset bid slipped away Dec. 29 in the championship game of the Shelby-Rising City Holiday Tournament.
The Huskies led 20-17 at halftime and 30-29 entering the fourth quarter before Class C-2, No. 7 Arcadia/Loup City won the final eight minutes to escape with a 40-35 win.
“This is a tough one to swallow,” S-RC coach Grant Gabel said. “We played the best defensive game so far this year. We did everything we could do to win this game because of our defense. In the end we just couldn’t make enough plays on offense to win the game.”
Austin Coffin knocked down four 3-pointers scored a game-high 13 points for S-RC (3-5). Bailey Belt hit two treys and finished with 12 points.
Tige Calleroz scored 11 points to lead Arcadia/Loup City (8-0).
It was a defensive contest throughout as the Huskies limited Arcadia/Loup City to 14-for-41 shooting (34 percent) while hitting just 12 of 42 attempts (28 percent) on the offensive end.
The Huskies play Friday at Class D-2, No. 5 Exeter-Milligan.
