The David City boys basketball team picked up its first home victory of the season Jan.12 against Cross County. The Scouts played clutch defense in the final minutes to hold on for a 38-34 victory.
“We did what we do best, which is sticking to a 2-1 press,” David City coach Cole Carraher said. “It took a total team effort to match up with them in their area. We did a really good job with that tonight.”
Points were hard to come by in the first quarter. The Cougars took a 3-0 lead with a three-pointer by Cael Lundstrom. Will Danielson’s contested layup put the Scouts on the board, and Luis Salazar followed with a mid-range jumper to put David City up 4-3.
After Cross County’s 5-0 run the Cougars led 8-4 to start the second quarter. The Scouts wasted no time putting their cold shooting behind them. Josh Seibert’s three-pointer with 7:40 cut the lead to 8-7.
Back-to-back layups by Danielson put David City up 13-8. Nick Ruth’s jumper from the free low line made it 15-8. After a steal and layup by Salazar, the Scouts led 22-13 at halftime.
The Cougars surged back in the third quarter. Lundstrom’s corner three trimmed the lead to 22-16. Kalin Gabriel and Colton Beebe made layups to make it 22-21.
Danielson responded with a layup to put the Scouts up 24-21, but the Cougars’ Pinkelman tied the score with a three pointer. Colin Vandenberg’s layup and two free-throws by Josh Seibert, helped David City close the quarter on a 6-2 run.
Pinkleman’s second three-pointer of the game cut the marging to a point, and Lundstrom’s driving layup put the Cougars ahead 34-33.
Danielson’s jumper put the Scouts back on top, 35-34. Cross County had opportunities to tie but their shots didn’t fall, and they were forced to foul. Danielson sealed the win with a free throw inside of ten seconds. He led the Scouts with 13 points. Seibert had two three-pointers on his way to 9 points.
The Cougars’ Colton Beebe led all scorers with 18 points, followed by Cael Lundstrom with 9 points.
