Mary Fiala finished 13th to help Aquinas to a second place finish in the Aquinas Invitational on Sept. 28.

The Aquinas Cross Country Invitational hosted area teams Sept.28. On both the boys and girls side, the competition at the top of the leaderboard was fierce.

The Scotus and Aquinas girls tied for first with 52 points. The Shamrocks won the tiebreaker with their fifth runner finishing ahead of the Monarchs' fifth place finisher.

“Tying Scotus was a great performance,” Aquinas coach John Svec said. “I think the girls are dialed in both physically and mentally.”

Claire Fiala of Aquinas led area runners with a fourth place finish in a time of 20:44. Right on her heels was Olivia Fehringer of Scotus in a time of 20:46. The Shamrocks’ Kelsey Faust was seventh in 21:11.

Lakeview’s lone medalist was Alison Loseke in 21:32 for 12th. The Monrachs' Mary Fiala was right behind her in 21:41 for 13th. A string of runners including Allie Frasher and Valeria Whitmore of Aquinas and Grace Obert and Baker Ashleigh of Scotus rounded out the top twenty.

The boys race saw Lakeview in familiar territory winning another team championship. The Vikings edged out Crete 42 to 47 for the victory. Aquinas finished fourth with 65, and Scotus rounded out the top five with 68 points.

“Our boys may have had the lowest point total for this meet in many years,” Svec said. “It was a great effort and improvement on their part.”

Eli Frasher of Aquinas blazed the course in 17:05 for first; 34 seconds in front of  runner-up Elliot Thomazin of Scotus. The Monarchs and Shamrocks each got one more runner in the top fifteen. Michael Gasper of Scotus finished tenth in 18:26 and Luke Frasher of Aquinas was eleventh in 18:27.

Lakeview placed all four of its scoring runners in the top 15. Landon Vogt finished 8th in 18:12 and Luis Neave finished 9th in 18:21. Jacob Kapels was 12th in a time of 18:28 and 13th was Cody Schaad in 18:30.

David City’s Justin Escamilla was the first Scout to cross the finish line in 20:28; good enough for 52nd overall. Dalton Crause in 54th and Carter Ossian in 55th weren’t far behind.

With districts just around the corner, each team prepares for conference meets next week. Columbus Scotus and Aquinas travel to the Centennial Conference meet at Pioneer Park in Lincoln on Oct. 6. David City competes Thursday Oct. 5 in the Southern Nebraska Conference meet at Wilber-Clatonia.
