The Aquinas boys basketball team dropped a home contest to Class D2 No.7 Humphrey St. Francis Feb. 6. The Flyers erased the Monarchs' double-digit lead of the first half to win 46-38.
“Our guys were happy to be up ten in the first half and got complacent,” Aquinas coach Kyle Eller said. “Right now, we are playing not to lose, and we need to play to win.”
Tyler Vavrina recorded the first Aquinas points on a driving layup. Braden Smith’s bucket underneath put the Monarchs up 4-2.
St. Francis tied the game at 6-all with Trevor Pfeifer's layup. Aquinas ended the quarter on a 6-2 run to take a 12-8 lead.
The Monarchs continued to stretch the lead when Zach Zavodny and Kyle Ruth added driving layups to give Aquinas a 16-8 lead. Aquinas got two baskets from Tyler Vavrina to go up 20-8.
The Flyers answered with a driving jumper and a three by Quinn Olmer. Pfiefer’s rebound and layup underneath cut the Monarchs lead to five points. St. Francis chipped away at Aquinas’s lead in the second half.
Jarrett Weldner’s jumper from the free throw line made it 23-21. Pierce Eisenmenger added a layup to tie the game at 23 apiece.
Vavrina’s two free throws regained the lead for the Monarchs at 25-23.
At the end of the third quarter, the game was knotted at 26-all.
Aquinas jumped out to an early 32-28 lead in the final quarter, behind Zavodny's two baskets.
Pfiefer caught fire for the Flyers from the three-point line. The sophomore made back to back threes to give St. Francis a 34-32 lead.
The Flyers held the Monarchs to one field goal the rest of the game. Vavrina led Aquinas with 12 points, while Zavodny added 11 points.
St. Francis’s Pfeifer led all scorers with 25 points. Olmer was second on the team with 11 points.
