On Feb. 5, the David City girls basketball team showed how much it has improved this season, but unfortunately it came in a loss at home.

The Scouts nearly stole a win from Yutan (12-9), leading 50-48 inside of two minutes. The Chieftains responded with seven unanswered points to win 55-50.

“We played maybe our strongest game of the year,” David City coach Nathan Wall said. “Yutan is always a talented and physical squad and we outplayed them in every single aspect of the game, except for at the free throw Line.”

The teams were tied at 3-all early when Johanna Vandenack scored on a fast break to put the Chieftains up 6-3.

Givens challenged Yutan underneath, recording 9 of the Scouts' first 10 points. Olivia Couch got in on the scoring with a bucket and a foul, and the Scouts led 13-12.

Late in the first half, the Chieftains threatened to go up by two possessions. Givens answered with a layup and foul to tie the game up. Allie Daro’s crucial three-pointer on the ensuing possession gave the Scouts the lead at the half. Givens, the Scouts' leading scorer, got into foul trouble in the third quarter. As a result, the Scouts offense struggled.  Yutan took advantage, outscoring David City 13-6. Early in the fourth quarter, the Chieftains built an 8-point lead before the Scouts mounted a comeback.

Lauren Vandenberg sank a rebound shot to spark David City’s offense. Macy Svoboda’s steal and layup cut the game to three points.

With under three minutes left, Givens added 6 points underneath to put the Scouts ahead 50-48.

Yutan countered by attacking David City inside, and Givens was called for her fifth foul.

The Chieftains hit all their free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

“We just need to continue to get the most of our practices that are left this season,” Wall said. “I hope that with how we played Monday is an indication of us peaking at the right time, which is the goal for this time of year.”

Givens scored a game-high 25 points. Fellow senior Olivia Couch added 9 points.

Liberty Josoff led Yutan with 11 points, while Vandenack added 10 points.
