COLUMBUS — Little Steps Childcare and Preschool officially opened its doors Aug. 28, just in time for the new school year.
Director Nicole Fleming and her staff worked diligently over the summer months to prepare the 3902 Howard Blvd. location.
Fleming is no stranger to child care.
“I worked for Head Start with the newborn to 3-year-olds,” she said. “Then when my husband and I started our family, I opened my own day care at home. It slowly moved on up from there.”
Each room inside the facility is painted a different vibrant color for the age groups Little Steps serves. The business is licensed to care for 64 children ages six months to 13.
Fleming's experience as a day care provider stems from several years working in the field, as well as being a mother to three young daughters.
Little Steps is new to the area, but already up-to-date on technology. An online and mobile service is used to communicate with parents.
“We use brightwheel for communication with the parents and kids throughout the day,” Fleming said. “Each kid has their own profile that includes an emergency contact on that app. It makes taking walks around the neighborhood a lot easier.”
Parents can also make payments through brightwheel.
Little Steps Preschool teacher Caitlyn Byrnes recently earned her associate degree in early childhood development. Byrnes plans to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in early childhood education while working for Little Steps.
“My favorite thing about kids would have to be their personalities,” Byrnes said. “They can be so spunky.”
Byrnes has always had a passion for children and plans to make her career out of providing child care. A bachelor's degree would allow her to care for a wide range of children, including those with special needs.
Fleming and her staff of three are excited to grow their business and look forward to welcoming new children and staff as time passes.
Little Steps offers part-time and full-time child care.
