American farmers took out nearly $6 billion in government-backed loans during fiscal year 2017, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency.

Loans included direct and guaranteed farm ownership loans, operating loans and micro loans, the FSA said.

In Nebraska, the state FSA office said it assisted 2,511 farmers with new loans totaling $412 million.
