Three David City High School students won a statewide contest sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy. Over 800 students from across the state created images that encouraged people to recycle, reuse and reduce waste. From those 800 entries, 13 students' works were selected to be featured in a calendar.

Winners were invited to the Capital for a private tour and a ceremony where they met Nebraska Lt. Gov. Mike Foley.
