David Louis Zimmerman was born Jan. 24, 1944, at St. Mary's Hospital in Columbus, to Albin and Elsie (Hecker) Zimmerman. He received his education at Bellwood Grade School, followed by three years at St. Mary's High School in David City. He was then in the first class to graduate from Aquinas High School in 1962. After high school he worked at Saunders Archery Co. in Columbus. In 1964, he joined the Army Reserves in Fremont. He completed basic training and Cook School at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri. He served in the Army Reserves from 1964-1970.

On Nov. 16, 1968, he was united in marriage to Judith Kampschneider at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. After marriage, he started farming on the family farm after his parents retired to Bellwood. He served on the Farmers Co-op Oil Board in Bellwood. He also served on the Alexis Township Board for over 30 years, and served as a lector for a number of years at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Bellwood.

David and Judy were blessed with five children and 15 grandchildren: Dale and Risa Zimmerman (Lauren, Matthew, and Michael) of Omaha; Michelle and Gary Lukens (Ashley and Amanda) of Tomball, Texas; Ken and Crystal Zimmerman (Aiden, Kreyten, and Camren) of Rising City; Galen and Megan Zimmerman (Isaac, Emma, Brynley, and Eli) of Bellwood; and Renae and Tim Lesiak (Jacob, Blake, and Paisley) of Clarks.

David enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, working on cars, camping, and traveling with his family. He had an awesome man cave train room that he teased was for boys only, and loved to tease his grandkids and spoil them with ice cream and treats. His family enjoyed listening to his many stories, which were often accompanied with photos and videos he had taken over the years. He took great pride in his family, farm, and home, and could fix or fabricate anything the situation called for.

He is survived by his wife Judy, his children and grandchildren.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Albin and Elsie Zimmerman; and aunts and uncles.
