Melvin J. Vrbka, 83, of Columbus, formerly of David City, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019, at Meridian Gardens in Columbus.

A parish rosary was held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in David City. Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the church, with burial in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in David City. In lieu of flowers and plants, the family requests memorials to St. Mary's Church in David City.
Melvin was born on Dec. 4, 1935, in Surprise, to John J. and Agnes (Ruzek) Vrbka. He married Virginia Polak on Feb. 9, 1961, at St. Mary's Church in Lincoln. Four children were born to this union. Melvin was a lifelong farmer and member of St. Mary's Church. He also enjoyed playing cards, listening to polka music, kolaches and tending to his cattle. He spent his early years raising sheep and dairy cattle. He loved his life on the farm and after retirement, he and Virginia traveled in their RV across the country. He loved going to the mountains and his favorite trips were their two trips to Alaska.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Virginia of Columbus; children: John (Tina)Vrbka of Bellevue, Jerry (Christina) Vrbka of Lincoln, Kathy (Paul) Yrkoski and Ann (David) Peterson, both of Columbus; one sister, Regina Skala of David City; 9 grandchildren: Tiffany, Angie, and Andrew Yrkoski, Kirsten, Nicole, and Aaron Peterson, Laura, Matthew and Patrick Vrbka; one great granddaughter, Paisley Ann.
