Steve was born December 2, 1952 in David City to Joseph and Lillian (Zavodny) Topil. He met his future wife, Susan Petersen, at the Butler County Fair. Four years later, on August 13, 1977, the weekend of the Butler County Fair, they were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in David City. Steve worked for the Summit Township in road maintenance until the department was adopted by Butler County. Steve worked in the Butler County Road Department ever since.
Steve loved tinkering on cars and tractors, and this love was especially handy while he helped his boys with various projects including their race cars. In his free time Steve could be found working in his garden, hunting, cheering on the Topil Racing team, or spending time with his granddaughter, Atley. He joined the Rising City/Surprise Fire Department in 1978 and proudly served as Fire Chief for 27 years, from 1981 to 2008.
Steve enjoyed driving bus for the Rising City Schools for many years. Friendships held a special place in Steve’s heart and he cherished each one of his friends that he met during his journey through life.
