David City senior Macy Svoboda clears the last hurdle in the 100 hurdles in the David City Quad on Monday.

David City track and field qualified five total events and four total athletes to state following the district meet at Centennial High School in Utica on May 9.

State qualifiers included a lone entry for the girls in senior Macy Svoboda. Clayton Denker, Christian Faz and Carter Ossian will represent the Scout boys at Burke Stadium.

"Before heading into districts we knew that we would have tough competition," said boys head coach Drew Rodine. "There were multiple events that had a few of our athletes sitting pretty good to place in the top two, but with districts we all know there are no guarantees."

Denker is a double qualifier, having earned a spot in both the 200 and the 400. He's back at state in the 400 for the second straight season after finishing 14th in 2018.

Svoboda will compete for the final time in red and black in the long jump while fellow senior Ossian is in the triple jump along with sophomore Faz.

Class C track and field held nine district meets with automatic bids awarded to the top two places in running events followed by the next six fastest. The top two in field events were invited to state along with any athlete who reached a pre-determined mark. Relay events state invitations went to the nine district winners and the next seven fastest.

"Super proud of Macy. She has worked extremely hard all year and making it to state was one of her preseason goals," girls coach Brian Hermelbracht said. "Macy is four-time state qualifier in three different events (400 relay, long jump, 100 hurdles) and by far one of the best all-around athletes to walk the halls and David City Public. So, it only makes sense for her to end her high school year competing against the best athletes across the state."

The David City girls scored in six total events and earned 26 points as a group while finishing eighth in a 10-team field at Centennial.

Svoboda accounted for three of those with a runner-up finish in the long jump and two fourth-place performances in the 100 and 300-meter hurdles.

Svoboda was one of just two Scout girls at state last year when she took ninth in the long jump and earned a seventh-place medal in the 100 hurdles.

Aquinas Catholic won the district meet with 125 points, seven more than runner-up Malcolm.

The 400 relay in fifth, 1600 relay in sixth and Maya Couch in the 100 were the other medal winners.

The David City boys scored in five events, totaled 34 as a team and were sixth out of 10.

Faz topped the results with his win in the triple jump on a leap of 41 feet, 5.75 inches. Ossian was right behind in second at 40-9. Denker medaled twice, taking second in the 200 and third in the 400.
