David City hosted its annual volleyball invite on Saturday, competing against a field that included fellow Butler County teams Aquinas and Shelby/Rising City. For the second year in a row, Shelby-Rising City made a run to the tournament final but had to settle for a runner-up trophy.
The Scouts went 2-1, Monarchs 2-1 and the Huskies finished 1-2.
Other schools in attendance were Central City, North Bend Central and Twin River.
North Bend Central won the invite going 3-0 defeating Twin River, Central City and Shelby-Rising City.
North Bend Central def. Shelby/Rising City, 25-17, 25-12: S-RC was unable to defeat North Bend Central during the tournament championship game.
Ingalls led with five kills, Jade Obershaw blocked two kills, Vrbka finished with seven digs and 10 assists and Kohl received eight serves.
"We were runner-up last year as well," Shelby-Rising City head coach Makenzie Kuhnel said in comments. "We wanted to finish on top, just like any team does, however, In the nature of our season thus far, we have been going through a lot of up and down games and finishing runner up, especially having up and downs all day throughout the tournament even, was encouraging as we come up against two conference teams this week."
Aquinas Catholic def. David City, 25-17, 25-17: David City's Lauren Vandenberg led the Scouts with 10 kills, Natalie Blum served two aces and totaled nine digs and 15 serve receptions and Payton Andel blocked three kills and finished with 16 assists.

David City def. Shelby/Rising City, 25-16, 25-21: Vandenberg led the way with nine kills, three aces and two blocks, Avery Couch blocked two shots, Andel and Blum tallied nine digs apiece, Andel finished with 19 assists and Neely Behrns recorded 15 serve receptions.
Kamryn Pokorney tied Vandenberg nine kills.
Shelby/Rising City def. Aquinas Catholic, 25-11, 25-22: Pokorney had the hot hand with 10 kills, Jordie Nekl served five aces, Jayce Vrbka had one block and 27 assists, Reece Ingalls finished with eight digs and Clare Kohl had nine serve receptions.
David City def. Twin River, 25-14, 25-12: Vandenberg finished with 13 kills to power David City past Twin River and win the third-place match.
Neely Behrns served three aces, Avery Couch, Maya Couch and Vandenberg all tallied one block, Lili Eickmeier finished with nine digs, Andel had 22 assists and Blum recorded 10 serve receptions.
Aquinas Catholic def. Central City, 25-18, 25-17
After the tournament, Aquinas Catholic's record sits at 7-8, David City at 6-9 and Shelby-Rising City is 6-11.
Aquinas will play Wahoo Neumann on Thursday and travel to Clarkson/Leigh for a tournament on Saturday, David City played in a triangular on Tuesday against Thayer Central and Wilber-Clatonia before taking the weekend off and Shelby-Rising City played East Butler on Tuesday before playing Palmer on Thursday.
