The offense lacked the same sort of pop as the first contest a week earlier, but the pitching was more than up to the task in American Legion Post 125 Seniors 4-0 win over Schuyler on June 11.
David City took down Post 47 12-4 in the first meeting of the season on June 4. The offense needed just five hits thanks to three Schuyler errors and 15 walks.
Logan Helgoth and Nolan Hartman combined for the win with just four hits allowed.
The second time around it was Andy Lyons then Dan Stara limiting Schuyler hitters to just two combined hits.
Lyons, Simon Krenk, Nolan Hartman and Hunter Behrns each drove in a run and David City went 6 for 7 in stolen base attempts.
“I felt pretty good. I was hitting my spots pretty well, and the guys were picking up the grounders and making the plays,” Lyons said. “They made it pretty easy on the mound.”
Lyons tossed the first five innings allowing just one hit, walking three, striking out two and throwing 40 of his 64 pitches for strikes. Stara tossed the last two innings with four Ks, one free pass and one hit. He tossed 19 of his 27 pitches for strikes.
Together, they never allowed a Schuyler runner past second base.
“We were putting the bat on the ball, making them make plays and had some really nice hits out there,” Lyons said. “It just worked out really well today.”
Following a 1-2-3 inning by Lyons in the first, David City struck first on two hits and a sac fly in the bottom half. Lyons led off with a single followed by a Joseph Reimers one-out single through the left side. Simon Krenk brought Lyons in on the next at bat with a fly ball to center.
Hartman started the second with a walk, looked to be stranded after back-to-back strikeouts, but Hunter Behrns drove him in on a single to center following a steal of second base. Lyons made it back-to-back singles and back-to-back runs on a grounder to right field facing a full count.
David City mounted another two-out rally in the third with a Stara single, Will Danielson steal of second after he replaced Stara as courtesy runner then Hartman liner to right scoring Danielson.
Post 125 was 4 for 8 with runners in scoring position through the first three innings then just had one hit the rest of the way.
Lyons was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two stolen bases.
“I think we’re doing well. I think we’re putting ourselves in a good spot for the end of the season,” Lyons said. “We’re hitting well, we’re fielding well and we’re getting better every game. I think we’ll be good by the end of the season.”
