Aquinas pitcher Kelsey Baer throws during a game in the David City Invite on Sept. 16.

The Aquinas Softball team used strong defense and pitching to take home second place in the David City invite Aug.15.

“Overall we played good softball all three games. Pitching was strong, the defense was solid and the offense was good for the most part”, Aquinas coach Paul Gahan said.

The Monarchs were fifth-seeded and matched up with fourth seed Guardian Angels.

After two innings, the score was 1-1 with GACC and Aquinas going back and forth. Back-to-back hits by Jayci Roh and Kelsey Baer gave Aquinas a 3-1 lead in the top of the third.

Sierra Meysenburg 2 run homer extend Aquinas lead to 5-1. The Monarchs ended up scoring seven in the third, to take the 8-1 lead. The Blue Jays rallied in the middle innings, but it wasn’t enough as Aquinas held on for the 9-5 victory.

Next, Aquinas faced top-seeded Twin River. As in the first game, the Monarchs found themselves in a tie after two at 1-1.

In the third Vanessa Bohuslavsky and Jayci Roh led off with a single and double. Valerie Bohulavsky brought in a run with a a grounder in the infield tying the game at 2 apiece.

A single by Darian Krenk scored two more Monarch runs to extend the lead to 4-2. Bridget Sisco single up the middle scored Krenk to put Aquinas up 5-2.

Kelsey Baer fired a scoreless performance the rest of the way to give the Monarchs the 7-2 win.

In the championship, Aquinas faced with Yutan-Mead. Liberty Jossof had Monarch batters guessing, as she held them scoreless into the seventh.

With the score at 1-0, Josoff helped herself out with a double, scoring two runners to put the Patriots up 3-0. Josoff would finish Aquinas off in the bottom of the seventh for the shutout.

Aquinas was 2-1 and Kelsey Baer threw three complete games.

“Kelsey Baer did a nice job in the circle. The offense hit the ball well the first two games, but we were stymied in the Championship game by a very good Yutan/Mead team,” Gahan said. “The girls’ play is starving to become more consistent.”

Scouts take third

An offensive outburst helped propel the David City-East Butler-Shelby-Rising City softball team to a third-place finish. In the first game the Scouts played sixth seed Logan View- Scribner Snider.

“I was fairly pleased with how we did today. Our offense was tremendous and our pitchers threw a lot of strikes”, Scouts coach Greg Jahde said.

Hits by Sophia Mefford and Aspyn Harrison helped to produce four runs in a six-run first. Scout batters were clutch at the plateand the defense did enough to secure a 19-13 win for David City. Jordan Roberts led the Scouts with a 3 run home run in the game.

Yutan-Mead matched up with the Scouts in the second game. The Patriots scored early when Frankie Hendricks singled and scored Rylie Jones. Hendricks stole second and third, and she came home on a wild pitch.

Down 6-1 in the third, a single by the Scouts’ Aspyn Harrison and a three-run homer by Jordan Roberts helped tie the game at six.

The comeback was spoiled when the Patriots’ Olivia Dunklau doubled, scoring two runs. Liberty Josoff shut down the Scouts in the bottom of the sixth to preserve the 9-7 victory.

The Scouts faced Twin River to decide third place. The offense was key for David City again, as the Scouts secured a 4-2 lead after two.

Patient at-bats and a two-run home run by Jordan Roberts in the fourth helped David City to an 11-4 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.

Streaky hitting by the Titans helped them plate four. Pitcher Aspyn Harrison got the Scouts out of trouble and secured the 11-8 win.

Harrison threw two complete games and Jordan Roberts threw one. Offensively, David City broke through for five home runs, three by Jordan Roberts.

Making the all tournament team were Kelsey Baer and Sierra Meysenburg for Aquinas, and Emily Neujahr and Jordan Roberts for the Scouts.
