East Butler sent nine wrestlers to the Lakeview Invitational on Nov. 30 and found success with seven of the nine placing sixth or better.
The Tigers finished sixth as a team, despite not filling every weight class.
The highest placers for East Butler were Brayden Brecka (2nd), Breckin Ratkovec (4th) and Colten Ratkovec (4th).
"Brayden Brecka was runner-up today and wrestled well this first weekend," said head coach Doug Glasshoff in comments sent to the Banner-Press. "Colten and Breckin Ratkovec both wrestled well and were able to place fourth in a rather tough opening weekend tournament. I felt like we competed well and just need to continue to push each other in practice and get ready for the Osceola invite next weekend."
Brecka went 2-1 during the tournament in the 106-pound weight class. He pinned two David City wrestlers on his way to the championship match.
113-pounder Michael Polivka placed fifth going 3-2 during the tournament.
Colby Jelinek, the 120-pounder, placed sixth. He was able to get pins in his first two matches during the tournament to secure a spot in the top-six.
Josh Spatz competed in the 126-pound division, recording three pins in five matches, including one in the fifth-place match against Carter Fjell of Shelby-Rising City early in the third period.
Kyle and Cody Heise were the 132-pound and 138-pound wrestlers, respectively, for the Tigers and both went 2-2.
145-pounder Breckin Ratkovec placed fourth in the tournament. After receiving a bye in the first round, he pinned Twin River's Mason Tenski in 3:11 before losing his semifinal match.
He rebounded with a pin over Scotus' Jackson Neville early in the third quarter before being defeated in the third-place match.
Colten Ratkovec placed fourth in the 182-pound bracket. He received a bye in the first round, before defeating Spencer Allen of David City in the quarterfinals.
He lost in the semis, but rebounded with a pin over Evan Hand of Scotus, but had to forfeit his third-place match to Allen of David City.
195-pounder Steven Thomas placed sixth pinning Cross County/ Osceola's Conner Shoup 4:22 into the match in the third round of the consolation bracket.
Nov. 29, Triangular: East Butler 36, North Bend Central 30.0/ Raymond Central 57.0, East Butler 24.0
East Butler wrestled Class C team North Bend Central and Class B team Raymond the night before before the Lakeview invite.
"We have a young team and that showed tonight," Glasshoff said. "What I did like was the fight that I saw in our team, even in the matches that we lost. We can work on technique and conditioning, but you can’t coach effort and this team has that. I look forward to what this team can achieve as we gain experience throughout the year."
