COLUMBUS — The first baby born in 2017 at Columbus Community Hospital made a late appearance.
Rowayda Abdinur Shafici, the daughter of Shukri Abdi and Abdinur Shafici, was due on Dec. 30. She came into the world Jan. 3 and is the second child born to the couple. They also have a 3-year-old daughter.
The family, who immigrated from Somalia, has lived in Schuyler for the past two years. They spent a couple of years in Columbus, Ohio, before settling in Nebraska.
Baby Rowayda, who was wrapped in a pink blanket and opened her eyes very briefly on the morning of Jan. 4 as she was held by her mother while recuperating in her hospital room bed, was born at 7:56 a.m. She weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces and was 20 inches long. The newborn was delivered by Dr. Kady Kiichler with Columbus Women's Healthcare.
The birth will be one of hundreds at CCH this year. In 2016, there were 609 babies delivered at the Columbus hospital.
