Arlene G. Fricke, 91, of David City, passed away Jan. 3, 2019, at St. Joseph's Villa in David City.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Presentation Parish in Bellwood. Viewing will be from 4-6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, with a 6 p.m. rosary service, all at the church. Burial will be at Sts. Peter and Mary Catholic Cemetery in Bellwood. Memorials have been suggested to Presentation Parish, Masses, or to Aquinas Guardian Angel Fund.
Arlene was born Jan. 14, 1927, to Adolph and Emma (Hamsa) Novacek, near Linwood. She graduated from high school, and then got her teaching certificate from Concordia College. On Jan. 4, 1949, she was united in marriage to Benjamin E. Fricke at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Schuyler.
Arlene was a member of Presentation Parish, the Little Flower Altar Society, 4-H, and the Catholic Daughters. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking and wearing her angel brooches. Arlene loved to help the church in any way that she could, and she spent many years volunteering at Aquinas Catholic School.
She is survived by her children: JoAnn (John) Messing of Shelby, Teresa Fricke of Pleasant Valley, Missouri, Marcia (Larry) Dittfurth of College Station, Texas, Dan (Darcee) Fricke of Lincoln, Mary (Matt) Parker, of Harrison; son-in-law, Ben Syring of David City; brothers, Adolph (Joan) Novacek and Marland (Phyllis) Novacek; sister-in-law, Catherine Novacek; 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Benjamin, in May 2018; daughter, Jean Syring; brother, Elmer Novacek; and great-grandchildren, Stephanie Syring and Calvin Sundberg.
