Sandra Lee Peterson was born June 10, 1940, in Aurora, to Bernard and Mildred (Robinson) Anderson. She was raised in Loup City and graduated from Loup City High School. Sandra went on to graduate cum laude from Hastings College with a BA degree in Education. On Dec. 27, 1959, she married her sweetheart, who was literally the boy next door, Richard Peterson, in Loup City. They had two daughters, Kristin and Kara.
Sandra and Richard raised their family in Hastings where Sandy was an educator in the Hastings Public Schools for 26 years, until her retirement in 2000. Sandy and her two co-workers pioneered the program for gifted students in Hastings. Richard passed away in 1998, and after her retirement, Sandy moved to Columbus to be near her daughter and her grandchildren.
Sandy was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbus, and served on many committees there, including coordinating the meals of care for church members in crisis and helping deliver home communion. She was a strong advocate for education, and loved nature, road trips, challenging herself with trivia and writing exercises, and spending time with family.
