COLUMBUS — A 59-year-old local man died Sunday from injuries sustained when he was struck by a vehicle in downtown Columbus.

According to Columbus Police Department, Timothy Kneifel was pronounced dead at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha a day after the accident near the intersection of 11th Street and 23rd Avenue.

Kneifel, known to many around town as the ice deliveryman for Geno’s Minno Mart, was crossing 23rd Avenue on foot when the accident happened.

The police department says a 2008 Mazda sedan driven by 51-year-old Kimberly Klassen of Columbus turned right onto 23rd Avenue from 11th Street and struck Kneifel, who was not in a crosswalk and was a short distance from the intersection.

Kneifel was transported to Columbus Community Hospital then transferred to UNMC, where he was pronounced dead.

The police department says alcohol, drugs and speed were not factors in the accident, which happened around 6 p.m. Saturday. Charges are not expected to be filed.
