Donald E. "Don" Schaufelberger, 93, of Columbus, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, at Meridian Gardens in Columbus.
The funeral service with Masonic honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, at Federated Church, with the Rev. Dr. Edward Yang officiating. Interment with military honors will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Gass Haney Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, Don would wish for memorials to be given to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Electrical Engineering.
Donald Edward Schaufelberger was born on Oct. 9, 1925, in Lincoln, to Oscar and Katharine (Heinrich) Schaufelberger. He attended school in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1943 as a member of the National Honor Society. On Dec. 24, 1943, Don was united in marriage to Norma Bomberger in Lincoln. He entered the United States Navy on Jan. 22, 1944, and served until his honorable discharge on Feb. 7, 1946. Don attended the University of Houston studying electronics, and graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1949 with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. He went to work for Consumer Public Power District following his graduation, and was employed there through the merger with Nebraska Public Power District. Don served in many positions at NPPD through the years and retired in 1989 as President and CEO. He continued to serve in the electrical power industry as a consultant and expert witness, and as a member of many electrical engineering and utility committees and organizations.

Don was a long-time member of the Presbyterian Church, serving in various capacities including Elder, Sunday school teacher, and usher. He was also a member of the Masonic - College View Lodge #320, Eastern Star, Elks Lodge, OFC, Chamber of Commerce in Columbus, University of Nebraska Foundation, Mid-America Council Boy Scouts of America, Ducks Unlimited, NRA, and the Platte County Historical Society. Don greatly enjoyed golfing, wood working, and motorcycle riding and touring. He was a member of Gold Wing Road Riders Association and the American Motorcycle Association. Don was a true gentleman who will be greatly missed by those that knew him.
Don is survived by wife of 75 years, Norma Schaufelberger of Columbus; daughter, Linda Mohr of Columbus; son, Rob (Gerry) Schaufelberger of Lincoln; granddaughter, Traci Shepherd of Wichita, Kansas; granddaughter, Wendy (Jack) Strum of Wichita; grandson, Christian Mohr of Columbus; great-grandchildren: Natalie, Kaitlyn, Hayden, Nathan and Connor; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Don was preceded in death by parents, Oscar and Katharine Schaufelberger; brother, Robert Schaufelberger; brother, Gerald (LaRue) Schaufelberger; three brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
