Dr. Charles A. Gray

Dr. Charles A. Gray, 88, of Columbus, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2019, at Columbus Community Hospital.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Federated Church in Columbus, with Rev. Edward Yang officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at Gass Haney Funeral Home, and will continue from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the church. Memorials made to the family will be for a use to be determined at a later date.
Charles Gray was born March 11, 1931, in Lincoln, to Ted and Mary (Deapen) Gray. He graduated from Platte Valley Academy in Shelton. He attended Union College in Lincoln until he entered the U.S. Army where he served from 1952 to 1954.
He completed his college studies on the GI bill and received his optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. On Aug. 31, 1957, he married Eula Sealing (of Shelton) in Chicago, and they moved to Columbus where Charles worked as an optometrist until he retired in 1999.
He was a member of the Nebraska Optometric Association and volunteered his time to VOSH International (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) where he served as president in 1988 and 1989. He went on many mission trips to other countries to provide eye exams and glasses to impoverished people. He continued to collect and sort donated glasses for this charity.

Charles was very active in service and support to his community. He was an enthusiastic member of Columbus Sertoma Club and Lions International where he participated in many of those clubs' events and services. He assisted with the Backpacks Program to provide meals to students each week.
He was frequently at the YMCA, where he enjoyed exercising and swimming. He was always very active in his life and loved to go on adventurous vacations such as whitewater rafting, scuba diving, bicycling, glider plane rides, touring Europe and enjoying the beauty of the mountains. He and his wife, Eula, rode BRAN (Bike Ride Across Nebraska) multiple times.
Charles loved to help people and was always offering his time and talents, and looking out for the well-being of others.
Charles is survived by son, Richard (Debby) Gray of Melbourne Beach, Florida; son, Alan Gray of Denver; daughter, Linda (Chet) Hahn of Memphis, Tennessee; sister, Judy (Earl) Cherry of Genoa; sister, Tedra Harring of Denver; grandchildren: Robert Gray, Erica Gray, Christopher Gray, Denise Schroeder, Alex Gray; special devoted friend, D'Ete Haldiman of Columbus.
Charles was preceded in death by parents, Ted and Mary Gray; wife, Eula Gray; special devoted friend, Joan Baumert.
