Duane Schacher, 91, of Genoa, Nebraska, died Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at the Genoa Community Hospital.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 24, at the Monroe United Methodist Church, with Pastor Tony Serbousek officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus at 12:30 p.m. with military honors. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday at Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus and continue from 9-10 a.m. on Monday at the church, with a family prayer service at 9:45 a.m.
Duane was born June 8, 1928, on a farm north of Monroe, Nebraska, to Rudy and Clara (Schweizer) Schacher. He attended Okay School and graduated from Monroe High School in 1945. He helped his dad on the farm until he entered the U.S. Army on Sept. 28, 1951. He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on Jan. 21, 1953. He returned to Monroe and helped farm and also sold hail insurance for Farmers Mutual for 50 years. He also measured land for ASCS for 10 years. Duane was a member of the Monroe American Legion Post 322, where he served as commander and treasurer. He was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer for 20 years.
Duane is survived by his nephew, Alan Battles; niece, Ann Battles; and many cousins.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Rudy and Clara Schacher; sister, Deloris Battles; and special Friend Florence Tomasevicz, with whom he traveled the world.
