Elden Kapels, 86, of Columbus, died Thursday, March 14, 2019, at Columbus Care and Rehabilitation Center.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20, at St. John's Lutheran Church, (12.5 North) Columbus, with the Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery with military honors by The American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, at Gass Haney Funeral Home, and will continue from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to St. John's Lutheran Church, St. John's Lutheran School, or The Lutheran Hour Ministries.

Elden Henry Kapels was born Sept. 23, 1932, in Platte County, to Henry and Hannah (Becher) Kapels. He attended St. John's Lutheran School and Creston High School. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Columbus.

Elden entered the United States Army on Jan. 20, 1953. He completed basic training in Colorado, and was stationed in Korea until his honorable discharge on Jan. 5, 1955. Elden was united in marriage to Lois Plageman on Sept. 7, 1958, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. They were blessed with four children.

Elden had a passion for farming, gardening, and raising cattle near Creston. They moved to Columbus in 2016. Elden enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and attending his children's and grandchildren's activities. He was active in several church organizations, Lion's Club, and American Legion.

Elden is survived by wife, Lois Kapels of Columbus; daughter, Lori (Jeff) Hess of Columbus, daughter, Julie Garrison of Norfolk, son, Brian (Paula) Kapels of Creston, son, Douglas (Sheri) Kapels of Creston;

grandchildren: Kyle (Kendra) Kapels, Lance (Jenna) Kapels, Austin Kapels, Lauren (Cole) Classen, Lane Garrison; Blair Kapels, Whitney Garrison (fiancé Taylor Wall), Jessica Kapels, and Shane Hess; great-grandchildren: Kennadie and Konner Kapels; sister, Helen Wiemer of Creston; sister-in-law, Donna Gosch of Columbus.

Elden was preceded in death by parents, Henry and Hannah Kapels; brothers, Elmer, Edgar, and Arnold Kapels; sister, Esther Siefken; brothers-in-law, Heino Siefken and Edward Wiemer; sister-in-law, Rose Ellen Kapels.
