COLUMBUS — Evelyn K. Bruegger, 91, stamped her passport for the last time as she traveled to heaven on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 562 17th Ave., in Columbus. After the gift of anatomical donation, Evelyn's remains will be interred at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa, at a later date. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. vigil, and 8:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, all at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus.
In lieu of plants and flowers, the family would like to continue Evelyn's support of Catholic education. Memorials are suggested to the Catholic School Fund for the support of children in need. Donations in care of Jeff Bruegger, 1125 Road G, Schuyler, NE 68661.
Evelyn was born Jan. 25, 1926, in Gorin, Missouri, to Wallace and Hazel Kittle. She married Donald H. Bruegger in 1945 at Burlington, Iowa. After Don's death in 1959, Evelyn returned to school and completed her BA at Avila University, Kansas City, Missouri, and her MA at Central Missouri State, Warrensburg, Missouri. Until her retirement in 1990, Evelyn's passion was community college education and community enrichment. She started her career at Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Falls, Iowa, before being recruited to develop the Communicative Arts Division of the new Central Community College Platte Campus. Evelyn also partnered with many Columbus businesses to provide professional development for their employees.
Evelyn was active in Delta Kappa Gamma at the state and local level, National Council of Teachers of English in Junior College and Phi Theta Kappa. She was committed to Hospice and Home Health, Family Ministry and Crime Stoppers. She enjoyed playing bridge, was an enthusiastic world traveler and loved nature.
Family was very important to Evelyn. In 1996, she was blessed with a second marriage to Norman Benolken (deceased) expanding her already extensive family: Barb (Jerry) Friesth, Steve (Diane) Bruegger, Cindy (John) Kubisch, Jeff (Marie) Bruegger, Norma (James) Kauffmann, Mary Jo (Dwight) Loseke, Eugene Benolken (deceased), 18 Grandchildren, 19 and 8/9 great-grandchildren, Betty Lile (sister) Macon, Missouri, and a large extended family.
