Gayle Goering, 87, of Platte Center, died Oct. 24, 2018, at Columbus Care and Rehabilitation Center.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus with the Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, at Gass Haney Funeral Home and from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the cardiac rehab center at Columbus Community Hospital.
Gayle was born March 1, 1931, in Platte Center, to Herman and Mabel (Kluver) Goering. He graduated from Platte Center High School in 1949. In 1951, he enlisted in the Marine Corps on his uncle Bob's suggestion. He was honorably discharged in 1954. Gayle pitched softball from the time he was 14 until he was 35. He married Carol Springer on July 26, 1965.
Gayle raised a huge garden, sharing asparagus, tomatoes, and pumpkins with everyone. Gayle also raised lots of pets including donkeys, miniature horses, ducks, geese, rabbits, turkeys, dogs, and quail. He sold seeds and chemicals and was on the board at Cornhusker Public Power District for 30 years. Gayle loved to play poker and Sheepshead, watch sports and attend auctions.
He will be missed by his wife and daughters, Gretchen and Allison. He is also survived by his brothers Ivan, Carroll and Rodney, as well as in-laws, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Glen, and sisters Wellma and Kathryn.
