Henry Rice, 78, of Columbus, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, at Columbus Community Hospital.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Gass Haney Funeral Home, with the Rev. Cindi Stewart officiating. Interment will be in the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday, also at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
Henry Edmund Rice was born Oct. 7, 1940, in the UP Depot in Powell, to Joseph and Claudia (Moore) Rice. Henry's mother was the caretaker of the depot and they resided in the living area. He went to Jefferson County District #45 country school through the eighth grade, and graduated from Fairbury High School in 1957.

Henry worked as a mechanic and truck driver at Eigenberg Produce Company. Henry was united in marriage to Marleita “Marty” Heuckendorf on Nov. 7, 1965, in Omaha. After serving in the United States Army, Henry attended college at Fairbury Junior College and finished at Kearney State College in 1971. He enjoyed being a pilot, taught auto mechanics at Platte College in Columbus for nine years, then operated Rice Automotive until it closed in 2001. Henry suffered a stroke in 1996, but continued to work on cars whenever he could. He enjoyed staying in touch with his former students from Platte College.
Henry is survived by wife, Marleita “Marty” Rice of Columbus; daughter, Lynette (Thomas) Hutfless of Omaha, son, Douglas (Rebecca) Rice of Lincoln; brother, Clyde Rice of Omaha, sister, Gladys (Terry) Cary of Blue Springs, sister, Rita Hodges of Missouri, sister, Ruth Rice of Powell; many extended family members.
Henry was preceded in death by parents, Joseph and Claudia Rice; brother, Alfred Rice.
