OMAHA — John Determan, 83, of Omaha, formerly of Columbus, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2017, at his home in Omaha.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, 1565 18th Ave., in Columbus. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. vigil, and 8-10 a.m. Thursday, all at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Interment will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Columbus with military honors by the American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard.
John Determan was born Sept. 15, 1934, in Dallas, South Dakota, to Ben and Pauline (Goeden) Determan. He moved to Winner, South Dakota, then to Norfolk, where he graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic Schools. John married Patricia Boltz on Dec. 28, 1953, at Sacred Heart Church. He briefly played football for Norfolk Junior College before enlisting in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Karlsruhe, Germany. John returned to Omaha where he began selling heavy equipment until he retired at the age of 60. He lived in Columbus from 1963 until 1988 when he moved back to Omaha. In 1988, John married Anne Davis. John loved playing golf, Nebraska football, fishing and spending time with his family. While living in Columbus, John was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church and while in Omaha he was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann.
He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Tolle of Columbus and Denise Pecks of Lincoln; sons, John (Paula) Determan of Omaha and Joe Determan of Omaha; stepson, Tom Bierchfield of Kansas City, Missouri; grandchildren, Brandy, Matt, Jesi and Johnny; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Carole Larkin of Palos Verdes, California, and Delores Rotto of Scappoose, Oregon; and brothers, Paul Determan of San Diego, California, Larry Determan of Temecula, California, and Don Determan of San Diego, California.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Determan; second wife, Anne Determan; and parents, Ben and Pauline Determan.
