LaVerne "Pete" Pieters, 80, of Columbus, died Saturday, June 1, 2019, at Emerald Care in Columbus.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 7, at First United Methodist Church in Columbus, with the Rev. Cindi Stewart officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery, with military honors by The American Legion, Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, at Gass Haney Funeral Home, and will continue from 1 p.m. until service time on Friday at the church, with a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. at the church. Memorials are those of the family choice.
LaVerne “Pete” Walter Pieters was born Oct. 24, 1938, in Bellwood, to Walter and Margaret (Bock) Pieters. LaVerne graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus, and entered the United States Army on June 2, 1957. After his honorable discharge on Jan. 31, 1964, LaVerne married Sandra Francis on July 30, 1964, in Bellville, Kansas.
LaVerne worked for Behlen Manufacturing and Champlain Petroleum as a dispatcher and truck driver until his retirement. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, NASCAR, and was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker football fan. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. Laverne's greatest joys in life were his wife, children, and grandchildren.
LaVerne is survived by wife, Sandra Pieters of Columbus; daughter, Michelle (Matt) Thorne of Grand Island; son, Kevin (Renee) Pieters of Omaha; son, Chad Pieters of Columbus; son, Brad Pieters of Omaha; grandchildren, Cole Thorne, Corbin Pieters and Callum Pieters; brother, Mike (Bonnie) Pieters; sisters, Phyllis Sladek, Janet (Larry) DeWispelare, Marilou Pieters, Diann (John) DeRiso, Sharon Oborny, Nancy (Loren) Hammer, and Lori (Mike) Brezina; many nieces and nephews.
LaVerne was preceded in death by parents, Walter and Margaret Pieters; sister, Pat Oleson.
