Mary was born on Oct. 20, 1957, to John and L'Nora (Zack) Jacobi in Genoa. She attended Genoa Public Schools and graduated in 1976. She met the love of her life, David Nelson, when they were both small children, but fell in love with him in high school. They were married on May 29, 1976, right after Mary's high school graduation. Their union produced four children: Brenda, Nathan, Betsy, and Jesse. They lived in Genoa until 1991, when they moved to Newman Grove. There Mary made some dear, lifelong friends that she cherished. In 2001, Mary and Dave relocated to Columbus, where they lived until her death.

Mary held many jobs through the years. She worked as a CNA, activities director, and dietary aide at Country View Care Village in Genoa and Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove. In 2004, Mary began working as a para-educator at Centennial Elementary School in Columbus. Children always brought Mary much joy, and she was especially suited for her work at school. She worked at Centennial until 2014. She loved seeing her former students around town, many of whom are now adults, to catch up and give and receive hugs. Mary worked at Hobby Lobby in the fabric department from 2018 until the end of her life. She described her work at Hobby Lobby as her “dream job,” as she loved the store so much. Her joy at being there was evident to customers and coworkers alike.
Mary's greatest joy was her family. She enjoyed driving around town and walking her dog with her husband, Dave. She supported her children and grandchildren in all their activities and ventures. Mary made every day an adventure for her grandchildren by bringing them surprise gifts and taking them on special excursions. She especially loved to surprise them by taking them for treats, like ice cream and slushies.
