Norman Dirks, 99, of Columbus, died Aug. 21, 2018, at Columbus Community Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25 at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Columbus, with Rev. Aaron Witt officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24 at Gass Haney Funeral Home and from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday at the church with a family prayer service at 9:45 a.m. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery.
Norman was born April 24, 1919, to Diedrich and Emma (Hollman) Dirks on the family farm in rural Columbus. He was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church. He grew up on the family farm north of Columbus. Norman attended District 77 School and Christ Lutheran School. When Norman started his schooling, he knew no English and only spoke German. He helped his father farm and they were one of the first to have a tractor, corn planter, and combine in the area. On Aug. 10, 1946, Norman was united in marriage to Mildred Gigax at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. He farmed his entire life. Norman was a lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church and served on the Christ Lutheran Cemetery Board. He was also on the planning board for the forming of Lakeview High School.
Norman is survived by daughter Beverly (Roger) Hellbusch of Columbus, daughter: Jolene (Erv Hake) Soulliere of Columbus, daughter Susan (John) Scott of Columbus; grandchildren Jamie (Galen) Tuttle, Blake (Anne) Hellbusch, Jon (Jana) Hellbusch, Robyn (Grant) Schaneman, Joel (Nicole) Soulliere, Brent (Katie) Jarosz, Craig (Taylor) Jarosz, Andy (Jamie) Scott, Jesse Hake, and Christine Bosco; and 15 great–grandchildren.
Norman was preceded in death by parents Diedrich and Emma Dirks, wife Mildred Dirks, son Lynn Dirks, Granddaughter Brooke Scott, brother Martin Dirks, and sister Dorothy Grotelueschen.
