Rachel Pearson, 96, of Columbus, died Friday, May 24, 2019, at Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, at the First Baptist Church in Columbus, with the Rev. Dan Odom officiating. Interment will be in West Hill Cemetery, rural Genoa. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, at Gass Haney Funeral Home, and will continue from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church, Camp Moses Merrill, or those of the donor's choice.

Rachel G. Pearson was born July 10, 1922, in Kamenica, Ukraine, to Ernest and Maria (Schroeter) Boettcher. In 1926, the family emigrated from Ukraine to Mexico. On landing in Mexico, the Boettcher family lived for a time in Vera Cruz, and then moved to Durango, where they spent four years while awaiting their visas to the United States. On Aug. 15, 1930, they came to Nebraska, and settled on a farm near Madison.

Rachel graduated from Newman Grove High School in 1941. On Feb. 26, 1942, Rachel was united in marriage to Vernon V. Pearson in Newman Grove. Rachel accompanied Vernon during his military career, and after his discharge, settled on a farm in Platte County. In 1972, they moved to Central City, where they operated and managed the Crest Motel. They retired and moved to Columbus in 1984.

Rachel was an active member of First Baptist Church in Columbus. She enjoyed bowling, baking, delivering “Meals on Wheels” and watching the Nebraska Cornhuskers. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.

Rachel is survived by daughter, Gina Gwinner of Columbus; son, Donald (Phyllis) Pearson of Lincoln; son, Dean (Dixie) Pearson of Omaha; son, John (Deb) Pearson of Kearney; daughter, Lora (Russell) Rice of Chapman; son, Craig (Crystal) Pearson of Hutchinson, Kansas; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters.

Rachel was preceded in death by parents, Ernest and Maria Boettcher; husband, Vernon V. Pearson; son-in-law, Paul Gwinner; brothers, Waldemar, Arthur, and Erhardt Boettcher; sister, Louise Stewart.
