Randy “Ski” Bonczynski

April 12, 1957 -- June 2, 2019

Randy “Ski” Bonczynski, 62, of Columbus, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2019, surrounded by family at Bryan Medical Center East Campus in Lincoln.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, at the Columbus Community Airport. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions in honor of Randy to the CancerCare Co-Payment Assistance Foundation.

Randy was born on April 12, 1957, in Loup City, to Adolph and Angeline (Czaplewski) Bonczynski. Randy attended Loup City High School, and went on to pursue a career with New Holland in Grand Island and Lexington. On Jan. 22, 1975 and Sept. 7, 1977 respectively, he welcomed his two beautiful daughters, who were the most important part of his life. In 1980, Randy suffered a debilitating accident at Dawson County Raceway. While this may have slowed down others, it became the first of many testaments to Randy's determination, resilience, and love of life.

In 1984, Randy moved his family to Columbus to pursue an opportunity to own and operate his own business, “Ski's Pawn and Gun”, which is still open and successful to this day. Randy enjoyed following all forms of racing both on television and in person; trips with friends and family; playing cards; downhill skiing; and most of all, spending time with his daughters and grandchildren. Later in life, Randy obtained his pilot's license and attended RedStar Pilots Association flying clinics where he mastered the art of formation flying and achieved the prestigious RedStar for his airplane. Randy was often the lead pilot in flyover formations for Nebraska Cornhusker football games, Creighton baseball games at TD Ameritrade Stadium, Memorial Day events, local high school football games, local car races, and many more. Randy's abilities were limitless. We will all miss his wisdom, humor, and courage.

Randy is survived by his daughter, Gwen (Dennis) Worden of Columbus; grandson, Adam (special friend Carli Clark) Bonczynski and Tristan Grahm; daughter, Randi (Scott) Masek of Columbus; granddaughters, Amelie Masek, Joey Masek, Gia Masek; sister, Marlene (Dewey) Wood of San Saba, Texas; sister, Judy (Tom) Van Winkle of Wood River; brother, Rick (Kim) Bonczynski, of Golden, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.

Randy was preceded in death by his father, Adolph Bonczynski; mother, Angeline Bonczynski; brother, Lawrence “Larry” Bonczynski.
