Ruth Agnes Deckert, 87, of Columbus, died Saturday, March 9, 2019, at Edgewood Vista in Columbus.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Brandon Foster officiating. Interment will be in the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4–8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, at Gass Haney Funeral Home, and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the church, with a 10:15 a.m. family prayer service.
Ruth Agnes Deckert was born on Nov. 18, 1931, on the farm her grandparents homesteaded, 12 miles north of Albion, to Edward and Mathilde (Hanson) Mikelson. Ruth graduated from Albion High School in 1949. On Oct. 8, 1950, Ruth was married to Archie L. Deckert at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. After they were married, they farmed near Newman Grove and later near Monroe.
In 1962, they moved to Columbus. Ruth was one of the first meter maids in Columbus. She also worked at Sears, Woolworths, and Daylight Donuts. She enjoyed collecting cookbooks, writing family stories, and spending time with her family. Ruth was very proud of her Norwegian heritage.
Ruth is survived by daughter, Janice (Lyle) Prosterman of Omaha; son, Dan Deckert of Columbus; daughter, Nancy Deckert of Columbus; grandchildren: Lisa (Jon) Martin of Lincoln, Audry (Zach) Kalisch of Omaha, Megan (Justin) Widmer of Omaha, Amanda (Dylan) Mason of Lincoln, Shawn Deckert of Columbus, Matthew Deckert of Columbus; great-grandchildren: Eli and Lewis Kalisch of Omaha, Lydia and Adalyn Widmer of Omaha; special friend, Karen Baker of Columbus.
Ruth was preceded in death by parents, Edward and Mathilde Mikelson; husband, Archie Deckert in 2001; brother, Bernard (Mildred) Mikelson; sister, Evelyn (Harold) Shuler; nephew, Ralph Shuler.
