Thomas Lee Lutjens

Thomas Lee Lutjens, 62, of Columbus, formerly of Platte Center, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Nov. 9, 2018, at Columbus Community Hospital, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at First United Methodist Church, with The Rev. Cindi Stewart and The Rev. Joe Krepel officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Gass Haney Funeral Home, and will continue from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be directed to the family. Husker attire is suggested.
Thomas was born on Jan. 15, 1956, in Columbus, to Lloyd and Marilyn (Von Bergen) Lutjens. He attended grade school in rural Platte Center, and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1974. Tom was united in marriage to Debra Kapels on Aug. 8, 1975, at St. John's Lutheran Church LCMS, rural Columbus. He played football at Wayne State for two years before leaving to work on the family farm. Tom was a member of the Husker Coop board for many years. He received the 2012 Outstanding Area Farmer Award. Tom was very active in First United Methodist Church, a big part of the startup of the Outreach Center, and he started the seminary scholarship endowment fund. Tom was an avid Husker fan, enjoyed traveling, farming, playing poker, and spending time with his grandchildren, family, and friends.
Thomas is survived by spouse, Debra Lutjens of Columbus; son, Jason Lutjens of Columbus; son, Carney (Lacey) Lutjens of Seward; daughter, Melissa (Jason) Mejstrik of Platte Center; grandchildren Jaelyn and Carter Mejstrik of Platte Center, Charles Lutjens of Seward; sister, Jody (Steve) Dreifurst of Columbus; brother, Dan (Kate) Lutjens of Columbus; stepmother, Dona Lutjens of Omaha; many nieces and nephews.
Thomas was preceded in death by parents, Lloyd and Marilyn Lutjens; and granddaughter, Elena Lutjens.
