William "Bill" Micek, of Columbus, died Thursday, July 4, 2019, at his home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 11, at St. Isidore Catholic Church. Military honors will be conducted by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10 at McKown Funeral Home, with a 7 p.m. vigil service, also at the funeral home. Visitation will continue from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Thursday morning at St. Isidore Church. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the St. Isidore Youth Group or American Cancer Society.
William “Bill” Micek was born Aug. 11, 1946, in Columbus, to Edward “Jeep” and Corrine “Corky” (Nearhood) Micek. He graduated from St. Bonaventure High School in 1964, and went on to UNL and Kearney State College. Bill served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War from April 13, 1966–March 5, 1970. On June 9, 1972, he was united in marriage to Christine (Smith) Micek at St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus. Bill worked for NPPD for 29 years until retiring. He then worked for the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross Prairie Valley Chapter in Columbus. Bill lived most of his life in Columbus, except for five years in Weatherford, Texas. He was a member of St. Isidore Church, Knights of Columbus, V.F.W. #3704 and Hartman Post #84 American Legion. Bill enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by wife of 47 years, Chris (Smith) Micek of Columbus; son, Kent (Brooke) Micek of Lincoln; grandchildren: August and Ingrid Micek of Lincoln; sister-in-law, June (Bob) Grosvenor of Newcastle; sister-in-law, Shell (Jeff) Heinemeyer of Yankton, South Dakota; sister-in law, Susan Smith of Martinsburg; sister-in-law, Mikki Smith of Sioux City, Iowa; sister-in-law, Mary Smith of Fargo, North Dakota; brother-in-law, Terry (Gayle) Smith of Colchester, Vermont; brother-in-law, Lin (Mary Lou) Smith of Ponca; brother-in-law, Dennis (Theresa) Smith of Yankton; brother-in-law, Randy (Tonia) Smith of Delta Junction, Alaska; brother-in-law, Bob Smith of Beatrice; brother-in-law, Dean (Marlene) Smith of Allen; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by daughter, Nicole (Micek) Bahn; brother, Thomas Edwin Micek; parents, Jeep and Corky Micek; brothers-in-law: Doug Smith, Richard Smith, Des Smith, Alan Smith; sister-in-law, Marsha Smith; mother and father-in-law, Martha and Desmond Smith.
