OSCEOLA — A 59-year-old postal carrier died Thursday morning after his delivery van was struck head-on by a pickup on Highway 92 in Polk County.
According to the Nebraska State Patrol, Steven Woolsey of Ulysses died in the 6:55 a.m. accident, which occurred about 1 1/2 miles east of the junction of highways 92 and 39.
The State Patrol says 74-year-old Barney Nugent of Antler, N.D., was driving a 1998 Ford F-250 pickup east on Highway 92 when he drove off the edge of the road, causing him to lose control.
Nugent’s vehicle crossed the center line when he tried to regain control and collided head-on with the 2007 Ford Cutaway Van Woolsey was driving west on the highway.
Woolsey, who was delivering mail on a rural route, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nugent was taken by ambulance to Annie Jeffrey Health Center in Osceola with minor injuries.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts.
